I wrote a post a while back on another blog about the Genesis Prose Theme. Someone recently left a comment on that post that stated:
Hi, the prose site isn’t on the studio press site anymore, so I can’t update it. I still use it and love it and haven’t had any problems with it just by updating wordpress and genesis, but my question is which theme replaces prose? I mean is there one where I don’t have to edit the theme by going into code? (this is also what made me buy this theme)
I wasn’t aware StudioPress stopped selling the Prose Theme, so I needed to do a bit of research. Sure enough, the Genesis Prose theme is no longer available.
Is The Genesis Prose Theme Still Available?
One word – no!
So why did StudioPress stop selling the Prose theme? No idea, you’ll have to ask them.
I can still access the Prose Theme page on the my StudioPress site, but it doesn’t appear I can download that any longer. The theme is no longer listed as one you can purchase.
So no, the Genesis Prose Theme is not available any longer for download.
Now What?
Well, you have plenty of other Genesis theme options. In fact, there’s actually a few free Genesis Child theme’s on the market. Some of which have even been designed/created by Brian Gardner, who created StudioPress.
But if you are looking for the Prose theme because of it’s ease of use, you are out of luck. It’s not available.
Or are you?
I’m running the Prose Theme on this site. It’s not the fanciest theme, but it does it’s job for me. I purchased this years ago, and I’ve been running it ever since I stood up this blog.
If you really have your heart set on using the Prose Theme, I’ll let you download my copy.
I don’t think I’m breaking any laws, since Studio Press is no longer offering or selling the Prose Theme.
So here you go, download the Prose Theme right here. Keep in mind, you’ll still need to purchase the Genesis Framework in order to run the Prose Theme. And that will be on your dime.
Bonus Feature
Have you ever wanted to set up a CDN for your WordPress site? Look no further, I created quite the post to assist with using Amazon CloudFront for WordPress.

You bet David, hope you find it useful.
I use Prose theme and have done for two years now. I like this theme. It seems to be working ok right now but each time I update wordpress, I get nervous about compatibility. How long can I keep using Prose theme if it is no longer being kept up to date? Please let me know – I’m pretty worried about it.
If it is better to switch over a to a more current genesis theme, could you give me a link of how to do it easily with minimum disruption to my site. Also if you know any other strong, responsive theme which allows you to put your picture in the header, please let me know.
Thanks – I appreciate all you can tell me.
Hey Lizzie – I wouldn’t get too nervous about compatibility issues with the Prose Theme. When is the last time your remember Studio Press rolling out an update to the Prose child theme? I was running it for 3 years and never saw an update. Yes they’ve updated the Parent Theme many times, but they don’t update the Child Theme’s. That’s the beauty of a Child Theme.
As for switching over to a more current theme, that’s totally a personal choice. I recently switched over to the Magazine Pro Theme (another Child Theme from Studio Press), with minimal disruption. Took me about an hour to customize it to my liking. Assuming you purchased the Genesis Framework, you should have access to “My StudioPress” which has everything you need to setup a new theme from them. It’s really just a matter of purchasing and downloading the theme, uploading it within the WordPress Dashboard, and activating it. Some of the more advanced theme’s have a number of different way’s to customize things, which can add a bit of complexity. With other’s, there’s not much to do. Most will even keep any widgets you have with Prose and and bring them over to the new theme. Pretty easy really.
Hope that helps.
Craig, I can’t thank you enough. I’d been getting pretty nervous. I didn’t realise that child themes weren’t updated. Great to know. Also glad to hear it’s not too difficult to switch child themes.
You’ve definitely put my mind at easy 🙂
Thanks
Just wanted to say thanks for the download! Hard to imagine why Studiopress would drop such a nice theme. I’m not a huge fan of web design these days; the layout is too “big” (kind of like hair in the 80s!). I guess that’s progress; I mean, more and more people are browsing the web on tiny little handheld devices — it can be a pain in the butt to read. Well, that’s just too bad for THEM, now isn’t it? I was still using the Kubrick theme (remember THAT?!) up until a little while ago; but couldn’t decide on a more modern one and then remembered the Prose theme by Studiopress. Glad I found this blog post and thanks again! Check it out, I didn’t even have to customize it, it’s THAT nice! http://diabully.com
I was looking for an update for the Prose theme myself, and I was quite surprised that it is no longer available. I noticed previously that other child themes involved HTML 5 (not sure what that means) and Prose didn’t.
One incompatibility issue I had was with using the OptimizePress plugin to do sign-up pages. There was some kind of problem and OptimizePress didn’t work properly with the Prose theme. I swapped to News Pro on some websites (HTML 5, I guess) but I prefer the look of Prose, so it’s disappointing that it seems to have been discontinued.
All the best.
Thanks for the Prose theme.! I bet I know why they took it down…….Because with all the built in options there’s no need to purchase anything to customize it?
Thanks again
😀
It is still there: called prose pro!
I need to look into that. Thanks for the tip!
I can’t find it but I want to set up a site with Prose for someone and don’t want them running into issues. Looks like the Prose Pro comment is only a month old… do you have a link you could place here to the theme… I have the full lifetime everything access from way back when Studiopress was new on the block but don’t see it, only the Prose theme in “My Studiopress”. with last update 2013.
